Two-day conclave to document common challenges and strategies for NEP 2020 implementation

The eight Northeastern states will come together in Nagaland for the first North East National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 Conclave for the Northeastern Region, with region-specific challenges in implementing the policy set to be documented for consideration during its eventual review.

The two-day conclave will be held on Friday and Saturday at JP Parks and Banquets, Naga United, Chümoukedima.

Addressing a press conference in Dimapur on Thursday, Nagaland Minister for Higher Education and Tourism Temjen Imna Along said the conclave would provide a platform for the Northeastern states to deliberate on common challenges and evolve strategies for the effective and holistic implementation of NEP 2020.

He said the conclave would bring together education ministers, academicians, university leaders, officials from the Ministry of Education, and representatives from schools, colleges and technical institutions across the region.

According to Along, discussions will cover school, higher and technical education, along with innovation, technology, skills and management. He said the objective was to develop a realistic roadmap and designated strategies for implementing NEP 2020 in the Northeast while strengthening partnerships and networking among institutions and stakeholders.

Highlighting the geographical and demographic challenges of the region, Along said difficult terrain and scattered populations posed distinct challenges to education delivery. He stressed the need for the Northeastern states to collectively present these concerns to the Government of India and explore measures suited to the region’s requirements.

Director of Higher Education Lovitoly said around 36 officers from the Northeastern states are expected to participate and present the status of NEP 2020 implementation in their respective states. Around 300 to 400 participants from government and private schools, colleges and universities are also expected to attend from Nagaland.

Joint Director of Higher Education Dr Medongoi Rhakho said the conclave would focus on the comprehensive implementation of NEP 2020 and provide an opportunity for states to present their progress and common challenges. He said the challenges would be documented and could subsequently be placed before the concerned authorities during the review of the policy.

On the possibility of a separate framework for the Northeast under NEP 2020, Rhakho said the states were implementing the same policy based on their respective situations and understanding. He said documenting region-specific challenges would help bring issues concerning the Northeast to the attention of authorities during the eventual review of the policy.

On Nagaland’s implementation of NEP 2020, Secretary of Higher and Technical Education Sarita Yadav said it would be inappropriate to describe the implementation as a failure. She said the focus should instead be on identifying gaps and addressing challenges collectively through discussions and consultations.

Yadav said the participation of stakeholders from School Education, Higher Education and Technical Education was intended to enable a holistic assessment of the policy’s implementation and allow the region to consolidate its concerns and recommendations.

The minister also highlighted infrastructure development and reforms in Nagaland’s education sector, including assistance from the Central and State governments and expansion of polytechnic institutions. He said efforts were underway to establish an engineering college at Kelhoshe Polytechnic.

The conclave will feature parallel sessions on School Education, two groups under Higher Education, and Technical Education. Four Northeastern states will present their NEP 2020 implementation status on the first day, while the remaining four will make their presentations on the second day.
