Dispute ongoing at 3 DU colleges:Student safety issue at Lady Shri Ram; demand to remove Hindu College principal, scuffle at Motilal Nehru

Police tried to apprehend an accused around 50 metres from the back gate of Lady Shri Ram College.

The incident took place on 22 September.

The accused was being apprehended in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Astha Kunj Park in Kalkaji.

He opened fire, after which he was shot in the leg during a police encounter.

Following the incident, concern grew among Lady Shri Ram College students about the security of the back gate and surrounding area.

The college suspended classes from the afternoon of 22 September and held online classes the following day.

Offline classes resumed on 24 September.

No CCTV camera arrangements

- The students alleged that there is not enough police surveillance around the back gate.

- They also said that security measures such as street lights and CCTV cameras are absent.

- There have often been complaints of incidents of sexual harassment there.

- Students held a protest over this.

- The female students demanded that the college administration strengthen security arrangements.

- Female students at Miranda House, Gargi College and Kamala Nehru College also held similar protests over women's safety.

Female students' safety has been a decade-old problem

The issue of female students' safety around Lady Shri Ram College has been raised for at least a decade.

- In September 2016, the college's female students complained of men engaging in obscene acts and following them around the back gate.

- The students said that some of the lanes connecting the college to the metro station remained dark and deserted.

- The Delhi Police subsequently increased surveillance around the college campus.

There have been molestation allegations in the past as well

- In April 2017, an LSR student alleged that a man had been following her for nearly two months.

- The accused grabbed and pulled the student in front of the college and molested her.

- The police arrived after passers-by alerted them and arrested the accused at the scene.

Demand to remove principal at Hindu College

At an emergency meeting of the HCSA held at Hindu College on Thursday, a proposal was passed to remove the college principal, Prof. Anju Srivastava, and vice-principal, Prof. Reena Jain, from the organisation's membership.

The Hindu College teachers' organisation will decide on further action.

- Concerns were raised over admissions under the sports and extracurricular activities quota for the 2026-27 session.

- The Hindu College Staff Association (HCSA) alleged that the allocation of sports/ECA seats in some courses was not carried out in accordance with the rules set by Delhi University.

- According to the association, 17 of the 48 sports/ECA seats went to the BCom (Honours) course and 15 to the Political Science Department.

- The university described this as a glitch in the admission algorithm.

- It also said that candidates had been selected on the basis of their sports/ECA scores.

Notice issued to 3 professors

On 18 August, the staff association passed a no-confidence motion against Principal Anju Srivastava and began a sit-in protest on 14 September.

The dispute later expanded beyond admissions to the functioning of the college administration and other issues.

Subsequently, show-cause notices were issued to three college professors-Dr Ratan Lal, Dr Shankar Kumar and Dr P.K. Vijayan.

The confrontation between the two sides is continuing.

Attempted to drag female students into a car on 5 September

- The second issue related to Hindu College concerned the harassment of female students.

- On 5 September, two Hindu College students alleged that some boys followed them in Mukherjee Nagar and tried to drag them into a car.

- The police registered an FIR, and two Delhi University students were later arrested.

Dispute at Motilal Nehru College amid DUSU elections

A dispute broke out among students at Motilal Nehru College on 16 September 2026, the final day of campaigning for the DUSU elections.

- A teacher was allegedly assaulted while trying to stop a student who was campaigning.

- The teacher was also reportedly injured.

- After this, a college professor began a protest and warned that teachers would not perform election duty.

- The dispute has also led to allegations of misbehaviour with teachers, entering the college premises, creating a ruckus and damaging public property.
