Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that the Mumbai campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) will benefit the economy of Maharashtra to a great extent and will provide Indian students to study in international-standard universities within the country.
Fadnavis highlighted that Maharashtra has secured seven international universities, with UWA launching the "Chief Minister Scholarship" offering 100 per cent scholarships to three Indian students.
"Indian students going abroad for education will now get the opportunity to study in international standard universities in India. Maharashtra has so far got seven international universities. Out of these, the Mumbai campus of the University of Western Australia was inaugurated recently," he said.
"Students getting the opportunity to study in India instead of going abroad will help in saving foreign exchange. Since UWA is becoming a research centre, it will also benefit the economy of Maharashtra to a great extent," he added.
He added that the agreements being signed with international organisations are now taking shape, which will further increase Mumbai's international importance.
The Chief Minister noted that the work of three universities started in August, after which the UWA campus has now started.
Fadnavis said that as per the agreements signed by the Maharashtra government with international universities, the campuses of other universities are also being built in phases.
He added that the current campuses of all the international universities are temporary. The final campuses will be set up in Navi Mumbai with a capacity of approximately 1 lakh students.
