IIT Bombay defers mid-semester exams following student death, protests on campus

IIT Bombay has postponed its mid-semester exams from September 26-27 to October 10-11 amid student protests following a student's death. The institute is also considering changes to hostel arrangements.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has changed the dates of its mid-semester examinations. The exams were earlier planned for September 26 and 27, but they will now be held on October 10 and 11.

The decision was taken as some students at IIT Bombay are protesting following the death of a student on the campus.

"This is to inform you that the mid-sem exams earlier scheduled on 26 September Saturday and 27 September Sunday are now scheduled on 10 October Saturday and 11 Oct Sunday with the same time table," an official communication from IIT Bombay informed students. "Thank you for your kind cooperation."

IIT Bombay has confirmed to Times Now Digital that the communication is genuine.

IIT Bombay student death

The exam postponement comes days after 22-year-old Sahil Wakode, a second-year BTech student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found hanging in his hostel room on the evening of September 18.

He was reportedly found hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone to access ChatGPT during a mid-semester examination.

After the student's death and the protests on campus, the IIT Bombay Board of Governors asked Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who was the invigilator during the examination, to go on leave.

The Board has also formed a 10-member committee to look into the events and circumstances surrounding the student's death. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 days.

IIT Bombay hostel changes

Following the incident, IIT Bombay is also considering changes to its hostel system.

The institute is likely to introduce twin-sharing rooms for students of all years. At present, students generally share rooms during their first year, while students in later years usually get single rooms.

The proposed hostel changes were discussed during an Open House meeting held on Monday between IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare and students.
