Tura Christian College marks 9th Foundation Day, first NEP-2020 batch of 68 students graduates

Tura, Sept 15: Tura Christian College (TCC) celebrated its 9th Foundation Day and 2nd Graduation Day on Tuesday at the District Auditorium in Tura, marking an important milestone in the institution’s journey.

Students, faculty members, church leaders, dignitaries and parents came together to celebrate the achievements of the outgoing batch. The programme featured speeches, musical performances and formal ceremonies.

The occasion also highlighted TCC’s growth over the past nine years, from its early beginnings to developing a distinct academic identity and stronger infrastructure.

The day was particularly significant for 68 graduating students, who became the first batch of graduates under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme within the framework of NEP-2020.

Rajya Sabha MP James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma, who attended as the chief guest, expressed pride in the college’s growth and contribution to education.

Addressing the graduates, Sangma said higher education goes beyond classroom learning. While academic training provides the foundation, he said true wisdom comes through life experiences.

He reminded students that college also teaches important values such as discipline, respect for systems and peers, and appreciation for the sacrifices made by parents.

Invoking the legacy of his father, late P. A. Sangma, Sangma urged the graduates to remain confident and aim high.

“Never consider yourselves second-rate. Always dream big and never let societal boundaries restrict your aspirations,” he told the graduating class.

Presenting the academic report, Vice Principal Biman Tesil R. Sangma said TCC now has an enrolment of 762 students across 10 major disciplines under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).

He also highlighted the college’s holistic curriculum, which includes skill-enhancement and vocational courses such as food processing, mushroom cultivation, fashion designing and music, along with active NCC and NSS units.

Looking ahead, the college plans to adopt nearby villages under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and complete the ongoing construction of its permanent campus at Rongbakgre.

Among those present were key members of the college Governing Body, including Dr Tony Trabert C. Marak (Retd IFS), former PCCF and President; Dr Sanggra A. Sangma; Prof. J. U. Ahmed of NEHU; Rev. Janang Arba Sangma, former General Secretary of the Garo Baptist Convention (GBC) and Invocation Speaker; and Dr J. D. Sangma, Chairman of the Tura Municipal Board (TMB).

Tura Christian College is an educational project of the Garo Baptist Association (Krima IV) under the Garo Baptist Convention (ABDK). The Government of Meghalaya has extended Adhoc grant-in-aid under the Peoples’ College Scheme.

The institution emerged from the Church’s recognition of its responsibility to produce conscientious and educated youth who can contribute meaningfully to the growth and prosperity of society.
