College teachers raise vacant posts, UGC scale & arrears

Shillong, Sept 18: Over over 40 sanctioned teaching posts in colleges are vacant, thereby affecting the students who pursue fourth year under NEP 2020

Addressing a press conference on Friday Meghalaya College Teachers Teachers’ Association President SK Pradhan said out of 488 sanctioned posts, 34 were vacant in July this year.

“The first batch of fourth year has started a totally new class added to our load. NEHU said at least two additional hands are needed. Students are suffering and we cannot do justice to them,” Pradhan said

According to Pradhan, many colleges cannot offer the fourth year despite admitting students under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme.

“They were promised four years but are forced to leave after three. If posts are not filled, their future is uncertain. They don’t know if a three-year degree will qualify them for graduate-level exams,” he said.

Regarding UGC scale, Pradhan said 69 teachers are still waiting for the pay scale.

“They were appointed with UGC qualification but are forced to take state scale. After the government gave option — state or UGC, they opted for UGC and fulfilled all norms, yet denied.

Pradhan said officials are of the opnion that giving an option does not mean government is obligated to give UGC scale. There is a lack of trust.

“UGC teachers get only basic and DA. We got 53% DA in July last year, 55% is not coming. The delay in getting arrears is afffecting the teachers”, he said.

MCA has supported the deficit school teachers over the structured pay framework.

The MCA wanted immediate filling of vacant posts and grant of UGC scale to restore confidence among deficit college teachers.
